So, Sean and I are coming to the end of our first year of exploring traditions and what they mean to us all. We’ve had a lot of fun learning to make the videos and then deciding what content we’d like to share. More than 30 videos have so far seen the light of day, with many more in the pipeline.
When we set out a year ago, it was with the idea that we could explore our own family heritage and then use this as a viewpoint into other peoples traditions. Well, we’ve had a good go at our own songs, pastimes and family connections, but limited time due to work commitments and then a global pandemic have ensured that we’ve stayed closer to home than we might have intended!
So what’s next?
Well, if you are reading this, you’ve found your way to our new website. It’s very basic to start with and merely a place to share some thoughts in writing and hopefully connect with some of you in a more direct way. We’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’ve watched and any ideas you have that you’d like us to explore through future videos and to that end we will get a forum/ chat space open if enough people show an interest.
In due course we’ll expand the website so we can get some of our merch over to you, both Deep Rooted and Copper Family and we’ll also include upcoming family events and links to other interesting stuff.
Sean and I have a few main areas we are concentrating on for the next few months.
The Copper Family Songbook - we are aiming to continue through the family songbook showcasing a mixture of old recordings, live recordings and some longer format videos taking a more in depth look at the songs and their contexts.
In Old England - we’ll be looking at traditional English (mainly Sussex) foods, visiting some special old buildings, people and places in Sussex and we may put up a few narrated pieces from Bob’s books.
Deep Dives - the lockdown provided us with opportunities to discuss traditions and our family history in more depth via Skype and Zoom. We have more to come with these longer videos, (although hopefully face to face!) including reaching out to people outside the family to explore their connections to tradition. Our original series, What Is Tradition? Will also continue as we look to draw together what we’ve learnt on our journey.
Thanks once again for all your support and feedback.
Hope to see you all at a family gig before too long!
Ben and Sean - July 2020
